A woman’s candid revelation about her name sparked a lively conversation and a wave of support on social media.
Megan, a 21-year-old, shared her feelings about her name in a TikTok video that garnered over 370,000 views on April 11. She expressed her disdain for her name, citing its commonness, especially in England, as the reason. Her honest comments resonated with many, sparking a flurry of responses from others who also had conflicted feelings about their own names.
Online, @gr3gan revealed, “My name Megan is something I’ve always hated because it’s so common.” She mentioned how there were at least three other Megans watching her video who felt offended by her dislike of the name.
In a contemplative tone, Megan shared, “I asked my mother why they chose such a common name for me. She explained that when she was pregnant, both my father and she decided on a Welsh first and middle name combination. She chose Megan over the name Angharad that my father suggested.”
Having grown up in rural Nepal, Megan found the name unique and beautiful, as she had never come across it before. However, upon moving to the U.K., she noticed how Megan’s popularity surged. At the time of her birth in 2002, Megan was the sixth most popular girl’s name in the UK.
More than 400 comments flooded in response to Megan’s post, with others sharing their own experiences with their names.
An individual with the handle @megatronbh reflected, “I used to hate being called MEG when I was younger. Now I find Meg to be adorable.”
Another user, @meggysmithyy, joked, “My name is Megan Smith. It can’t get more common than that.”
One user, @emmcg64, chimed in, “Megan… my first name is Emily. It’s much worse,” while @livly0ns added, “Try having the name Olivia.”
