Letitia James serves as the Attorney-General of New York. She recently celebrated a significant win of $44 million for the citizens of New York.
James made headlines with her lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson over the deceptive marketing of talcum-based products. In collaboration with 42 Attorneys General nationwide, James accused the company of misleading advertising of products containing talcum.
The controversy surrounding talcum in cosmetics, primarily for its moisture-absorbing properties, has sparked health concerns. Critics suggest potential health risks associated with these products.
As per the lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson distributed talcum products in various outlets, including beauty salons and churches predominantly serving communities of color. The coalition of attorneys-general announced a $700 million settlement with Johnson & Johnson, with New York receiving $44 million.
James emphasized the unjust targeting of communities with hazardous cosmetics, stating that while monetary compensation cannot reverse the harm caused, accountability is paramount. She reassured that these harmful products will no longer be available in New York.
Additionally, a prior agreement resolving claims regarding talc with a group of 43 Attorneys General was also finalized. Johnson & Johnson has not admitted any wrongdoing in this case.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicates a potential link between talc powder use in genital areas and ovarian cancer. However, more research is needed to confirm this association.
