So, get this—there’s a Gen Z lady who’s dropping $100 daily on Ubers.
Tiana Arriga, a 24-year-old from sunny Los Angeles, has shared a video on her TikTok (@tiana.com) where she spills the beans on her daily Uber spending habits. She’s shelling out most of her paycheck on rides to and from work, leaving her with just 30 bucks in her pocket. The video has gone viral, racking up over 1.4 million views and 237,800 likes on TikTok. It’s safe to say her choice of commute has got the internet buzzing.
She justified her spending by explaining, “I currently don’t have a car, and I hustle two jobs with only an hour between them. Taking a bus or train would make me an hour late.” Since moving to a new place in June 2024, Tiana’s Uber bill hits $100 per week or $500 a month if she rides every day.
Fortunately, her employer agreed to pitch in $50 daily to cover these costs for the short term—just for a month. Tiana appreciates the help as Ubers have become “less pricey” now.
She chirped, “My workplace is moving closer by month’s end, so I’m fine with the current commute costs.”
According to Statista, most commuters (29%) spend between 15 to 29 minutes on their journeys. Only a measly 5 percent endure commutes between 60 to 119 minutes like Tiana.
The pandemic ushered in remote work, which led to many businesses adopting it. As a result, 23 percent of people don’t have to commute at all.
What’s the Buzz on TikTok?
The TikTok community isn’t all on board with Tiana’s Uber splurge. Some suggest she opts for a cheaper alternative to stop “hemorrhaging” money on rides.
When Tiana shared her “losing money” Uber rant, little did she expect it to blow up. She thought it was a humorous anecdote that might pique her followers’ interest. Responding to queries, she put out another video giving more context to her situation.
With over 2,100 comments flooding in within days, it’s clear that Ubers have drawn quite the attention on social media. Comments like “Wake up earlier and catch the bus, it’s time” are in abundance.
One user expressed relief, saying, “I’m grateful I live ten minutes from work; driving’s the way to go.”
However, not everyone was sympathetic. One TikToker lamented, “My entire paycheck was basically going straight to Ubers, I was basically working to pay for them.”
Another commenter shared, “These $40 daily Ubers are sucking my wallet dry.”
