Jessica Simpson recently clapped back at a troll on social media who made the unfounded claim that she was back to drinking alcohol.
This incident unfolded on August 5 when the fashion mogul and singer, 44, posted a touching black-and-white photo of her 11-year-old son, Ace. The comment that sparked the response read, “STOP DRINKING!”—an accusation that had nothing to do with her post.
In reply, Simpson set the record straight. “I haven’t wanted or touched alcohol since October 2017 and it has been the best decision I’ve made for myself and for my family,” she said. “Thank You for your concern, but you have me very misunderstood. Sending love your way.”
The “Sweetest Sin” singer has been open about her past struggles with substance abuse, detailing her journey in her 2020 memoir, Open Book, and various interviews. On an episode of the Today show, Simpson described a pivotal moment in her life—missing out on Halloween with her kids in 2017—which prompted her to confront her issues.
Since then, she has embraced a sober lifestyle, feeling empowered to face challenges head-on without the need for substances. “At this point in my life, I’m strong enough to deal with anything that comes my way,” she shared. “Because I don’t have something to retreat to that will numb me from actually going through it.”
Her two older kids, Maxwell and Ace, are aware of their mom’s sobriety. “They know Mommy doesn’t drink wine because it makes her too silly,” she explained to BuzzFeed News back in February 2020. “So, when I explained it to my kids they really understood that Mommy is just living her best life!”
