Katie Holmes Opens Up About Adjusting to Life as Suri Prepares for College

Katie Holmes is about to embrace life as an empty nester.

In a recent interview with Town & Country, the 45-year-old actress shared her feelings about her daughter Suri Cruise heading off to college at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She admitted she will miss the “close proximity” they’ve enjoyed over the years.

“I’m really proud of my daughter… I’m happy,” Holmes expressed about her 18-year-old, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise. “I remember being this age, a time of beginnings. It’s exciting to discover yourself, and I loved that phase of life, so I feel happy about it.”

Suri, who recently made her college announcement via a TikTok video from her LaGuardia High School classmate, sported a big smile as she highlighted Carnegie Mellon’s name on her sweatshirt.

As she prepares for this new chapter, Holmes has been diving into various creative outlets. From gearing up for a Broadway revival of Our Town to taking painting classes and joining a book club, she’s keeping busy. She’s also been practicing her dance moves, saying, “I love a dance studio because every time you enter, you’re starting from the beginning. That’s a good, meditative way to approach the day.”

Despite her book club only meeting a few times a year, Holmes joked that she might be reaching out more often once Suri leaves for college. “The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me,” she laughed. “I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.'”

Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006, just months before she married Cruise in an extravagant Italian ceremony. The star couple, famously known as “TomKat,” began dating in April 2005 but divorced in June 2012, with Holmes receiving primary custody of their daughter.
