Top Chef alum Shirley Chung recently shared a challenging update with her followers on Instagram. The 47-year-old executive chef revealed that she has been diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer.
As reported by US Weekly, Shirley explained that her health issues began last December with severe dental problems, including a tongue injury and a broken tooth, which were initially attributed to her grinding her teeth.
In a heartfelt video where she shaved her head, Shirley expressed her calm reaction to the diagnosis, saying, “As a chef, I’ve always thrived under pressure.” She emphasized her proactive approach to getting tests done quickly to start her treatment.
Shirley mentioned, “I’ve just completed six weeks of chemo and have many more to go, visiting the hospital four times a week for injections. It feels like a full-time job.” She shared that her tumor is shrinking and her ability to eat and speak is improving. The support from her close friends and family has been invaluable, although it took her two weeks to share her diagnosis with her parents.
Reflecting on her journey, she stated, “I can be strong 98% of the time, but it’s also okay to not be okay. I have a long road ahead for recovery, but your love and support will help me immensely. Get ready for Shirley Chung 2.0 in 2025!”
Following her announcement, many in the culinary community rallied around her with messages of support. Chef Amanda Freitag wrote, “You’re an incredible human and will beat this with style and grace!” while Chef Stephanie Izard added, “Love you, friend! Stay positive!”
Fans also chimed in with uplifting messages like, “Sending strength and love!” and “You are a strong chef, and we’re all proud of you. Thank you for sharing.” You can feel the love surrounding Shirley as she battles through this tough time.
