The Emotional Moment: Why Angelina Jolie Broke Down at the Venice Film Festival

Angelina Jolie’s latest film, Maria, is creating a stir in the entertainment world. Premiering on August 29 at the Venice Film Festival, the film draws inspiration from the life of legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Following the screening, Jolie, 49, received an emotional standing ovation that lasted an impressive eight minutes, bringing her to tears.

During this heartfelt moment, Jolie was visibly moved, at times covering her face in disbelief. As she made her way to the stage for a Q&A session, director Pablo LarraĆn extended a helping hand to assist her up the stairs.

Before Maria, Jolie hadn’t starred in a film since 2021’s Eternals. In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she shared that she took a break from acting to focus on her children. The story of Callas resonated deeply with her, making her want to come back to the screen.

To fully embody her character, Jolie took opera and Italian lessons, stating, “I would recommend almost every human being take an opera class. It’s an experience that challenges you to express your full self.” She emphasized the importance of embracing one’s emotions, something that resonates throughout the film.

The release of Maria comes during a tumultuous time for Jolie, who is navigating her divorce from Brad Pitt and her son Pax’s recent e-bike accident.

Critics have already praised the film, with The Independent calling Jolie’s performance career-defining, while The New York Times suggests she might be on the path to an “Oscars comeback.”

Fans can look forward to streaming Maria on Netflix later this year.
