Unpacking Jeremy Allen White’s Journey to Stardom

The phrase “yes, Chef” has jumped from the kitchens of high-end eateries to the everyday vocabulary of fans, all thanks to the viral success of FX’s The Bear. At the heart of this phenomenon is Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Allen White.

Since his film debut in Beautiful Ohio back in 2006, Jeremy has graced screens with his unique and often self-deprecating characters. From bit parts in shows like Law & Order to leading roles in critically acclaimed series, he has become a household name.

Jeremy began his journey with small roles in legal dramas like Conviction and low-budget films such as The Fourth and Gloria & Eric. His big break came when he landed the role of Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in Showtime’s Shameless, which ran for 11 seasons and earned 16 nominations and 4 Emmy wins, solidifying his place in the spotlight.

Even with his busy schedule on Shameless, Jeremy made time for films like Movie 43 and After Everything, where he shared the screen with stars like Marisa Tomei and Dakota Fanning.

As detailed in a GQ piece, the showrunner of The Bear, Christopher Storer, approached Jeremy while he was filming Shameless, hoping he would take on the role of Chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto.

In the GQ interview, he reflected on the similarities between Carmy and Lip, saying, “I was going from one gifted kid in a dysfunctional family to another. Initially, I concerned myself too much with outside opinions.” Jeremy also mentioned his reluctance to let someone else take on the role, adding a sprinkle of competitive motivation to his decision.

Now with a collection of Emmys, a Golden Globe, and involvement in high-profile campaigns, including those for Calvin Klein, Jeremy Allen White’s star is on the rise. Fans can look forward to Season Four of The Bear, set to premiere on FX/HULU in June 2025.
