Wheel of Fortune fans have voiced their concerns over the show’s revamped set, but production designer James Pearse Connelly is embracing the changes. In an interview with People on September 19, he acknowledged the natural resistance to change among fans.
Connelly likened the show’s evolution to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, revealing, “The show has experienced numerous eras, much like Taylor Swift. My goal was to reflect all of them in the new design.”
A three-time Emmy winner, Connelly has also crafted sets for other popular shows like The Voice and The Kelly Clarkson Show. While he expects initial resistance, he believes that over time, fans will “feel right at home” with the new look.
Calling the redesign a “bucket list item,” Connelly emphasized that the updates were necessary to enhance the overall experience and address issues of the old set. He faced the challenge of integrating technology that can adapt for special themed weeks in the design.
Maggie Sajak showcased some of the innovations, such as an LED floor, during her tour of the new set, which aired on September 18. Despite some fans expressing frustration over the tech-heavy look and vibrant colors, others appreciated the refresh. “Love the set! I love the new base on the Wheel too! ❤️🙌,” one fan enthusiastically commented.
New episodes of Wheel of Fortune air weeknights at 7:30 PM.
