In a recent chat with Variety, music icon Sir Elton John made a heartfelt plea to American voters as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer encouraged citizens to consider their values and ensure they “make the right decision” at the ballot box.
Famous for his outspoken stance on social justice, John took the opportunity to voice his worries about the current tumultuous political climate.
“America is in a very volatile position. It’s a country I love, and I’m so grateful for what it has made me,” he shared.
With a long history of advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ rights through his Elton John AIDS Foundation, John highlighted the need to elect leaders who will stand up for human rights and foster inclusivity.
“I just want people to vote for what’s right: the right to choose, the right to be yourself, without others dictating who you should be. That includes the Supreme Court,” he added.
While he hasn’t endorsed any specific candidates, John maintained a neutral stance regarding political affiliations.
“I don’t tell my audience who to vote for—it’s not my place. They come to see me, and for that, I’m truly thankful,” he remarked.
During the interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, John also touched on his hit song “Rocketman,” which inspired former President Donald Trump’s nickname for Kim Jong Un, “The Little Rocket Man.” He found the nickname amusing, saying, “I laughed—good on you, Donald. He’s been to my concerts many times and has always been a supporter.”
Though usually staying out of U.S. political debates, John’s comments in the Variety piece underscored his hope for an informed and engaged electorate.
“Kindness will always prevail. That’s my hope for the upcoming American election,” he concluded, longing for a “calmer America.”
