The relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William has been under the spotlight for decades. However, the true depth of their complicated dynamic became more apparent after Harry stepped away from royal duties and relocated to the U.S. in 2020.
After moving with Meghan Markle, Harry shared his experiences and grievances regarding royal life through interviews, documentaries, and his bestseller memoir. While tabloids and social media focus on their ongoing feud, Harry emphasizes that he still loves William and hopes for a future reconciliation—one that acknowledges mutual accountability.
‘Time Heals All Things…Hopefully’
Harry’s departure from the royal family was marked by an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Meghan made startling revelations, including that Kate made her cry prior to her wedding and Harry’s claims of financial severance from King Charles.
When discussing his brother, Harry acknowledged the strain but reiterated his love for William, stating, “The relationship is space at the moment… time heals all things… hopefully.”
‘My Brother’
In 2023, Harry’s memoir, Spare, offered an unfiltered look into his relationship with William, revealing they weren’t as close as many believed. He included details of a heated altercation at Kensington Palace in 2019 over Meghan’s treatment of staff.
During interviews to promote his book, he expressed that it was never his intention to hurt his family, including William.
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Harry said he wants to rebuild closeness with his family but sees the relentless tabloid scrutiny as a major hurdle. “Without the British press, we would probably still be a fairly dysfunctional family… I look forward to a relationship with my brother and father,” he shared.
‘Reconciliation’ but With ‘Accountability’
In conversations with British TV presenter Tom Bradby, Harry opened up about the potential for reconciliation, stating, “Forgiveness is absolutely possible because I want my father and brother back.” However, he emphasized that any reunion should come with acknowledgment of past issues, particularly regarding Meghan, which partly drove their departure from the monarchy.
“I’ve made peace, but I still want reconciliation… It would be fantastic for everyone,” he noted.
Diana
Reflecting on his late mother, Princess Diana, Harry expressed that she would be saddened by the current rift with William. “I think she’d be heartbroken that it has come to this,” he added, suggesting that healing is a long-term process.
As of now, Prince William has not publicly addressed Harry’s claims. The last time they were seen together was at King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023, where they reportedly did not interact.
