A charming story has emerged online of a couple who are involving their toddler in their home renovation project, winning hearts all around.
Their daughter, Bella, a spirited 2-year-old, has been dubbed the “independent DIY queen” after a video showcasing her enthusiasm for home improvement went viral. The clip has racked up over 7.1 million views and garnered more than 270,000 likes, resonating with many viewers.
In the video, Bella is seen eagerly participating in the renovation of her family’s new home in Wrexham, Wales, which they acquired in August 2023. From running to a DIY store to learning how to operate a drill under her dad’s supervision, Bella’s involvement is both adorable and inspiring. An on-screen text poignantly states, “When you want your daughter to grow up to be a strong, independent DIY queen. So you teach her young.”
Although Bella spends most of her time with her grandparents due to safety concerns during the renovation, her mom, Mitchell, notes that she loves getting involved whenever she can.
“She enjoys helping out with all sorts of tasks around the house. It’s just in her nature,” said Mitchell, who manages the family’s Instagram account @mitchellsathome.
When she’s able, Bella learns the ropes on basic tools while spending quality moments with her father, Jamie, who is handling the bulk of the renovation workload.
The family has been intensely renovating their home for over a year, documenting their journey online since April to inspire others to tackle home improvement without breaking the bank.
This journey has meant some sacrifices, such as moving in with Mitchell’s parents at the project’s start. “Jamie has been dedicated to renovations, while I’ve managed home life, which has been hard on Bella since she misses her dad,” Mitchell explained.
However, through these challenges, Bella’s bond with Jamie has grown stronger. They are motivated to transform their new house, filled with memories from previous owners, into a home that sparks new joyful experiences.
“The cherished memories associated with this home pushed us to make it special for its future,” Mitchell shared.
‘My Dad Did This’
The couple has been pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming positive response to their uplifting video, which they hadn’t expected to go viral.
Many viewers have connected with the theme of teaching practical skills to children, sharing their own experiences. One commented, “My dad did this. I’m an architect now,” while another noted, “My dad did this with my daughter; she’s graduating with a BSc in Biomedical Engineering.”
Mitchell aims to encourage her daughter to be confident and self-reliant as she grows up. “I want Bella to fearlessly embrace roles traditionally seen as ‘men’s work’,” she said.
Ultimately, the couple’s aspiration is for Bella to develop independence and realize she can achieve anything, unencumbered by societal norms. “I want her to believe she can do anything, no matter the barriers,” Mitchell emphasized.
