There’s a major recall of hundreds of thousands of pounds of meat products due to concerns of causing food poisoning from a widespread listeria outbreak.
Boar’s Head Provisions Co. is recalling several products after discovering listeria monocytogenes during routine testing. This bacterium can lead to severe illnesses, including fatal ones, in certain individuals.
Nine products are part of the recall, with one liverwurst item testing positive for the bacterium and eight other deli meats made on the same line and day. Across 13 states, 34 individuals have fallen sick after consuming the recalled products, resulting in two deaths.
The recall includes various products like “Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA” and other deli meats with specific sell-by dates.
Approximately 207,528 pounds of meat are being recalled, and the products are labeled as “unfit for human consumption” with a Class I risk classification.
The affected states include Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Investigations by government agencies are ongoing.
It’s essential to note that listeriosis could lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, and severe infections, especially in vulnerable individuals like infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) advises consumers to discard the recalled products and for retailers not to sell items with the mentioned sell-by dates to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.
