Urgent Chocolate Recall: Important Safety Alert for Shoppers

A Swedish Candy Co., a chocolate retailer based in New York, has recalled its Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bars due to concerns that they may contain undeclared nuts and wheat. This precautionary measure was announced on Friday in collaboration with the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall is particularly important for individuals with allergies or severe sensitivities to almonds and wheat, as consuming these chocolate bars could lead to serious or even life-threatening allergic reactions.

The affected chocolates were sold at BonBon retail locations in New York City, specifically at “130 Allen St., 1220 Lexington Ave., and 705 Driggs Ave.” These products are imported directly from Sweden, as noted on the A Swedish Candy Co. website, and are not manufactured in the U.S.

Pictures shared in the recall reveal the chocolate bars are packaged in yellow wrappers with “Marabou” prominently written in red. They include an image of the chocolates and a turquoise label indicating “havssault,” which means sea salt in Swedish, along with “made in Sweden.”

Each bar measures 9 inches by 4 inches and weighs 185 grams. The specific production codes linked to this recall are OUV0134912 and OUV0140643. Fortunately, the FDA has not received reports of any illnesses associated with this product as of now.

The recall was triggered after it came to light that some batches of Marabou Sea Salt chocolate inadvertently contained almonds, wheat, and other nuts outside of the stated allergens. The packaging only mentioned that the product might have ‘traces of nuts and wheat.’ BonBon was notified about the recall by their distributor, Ert Godis, on May 8, 2024, leading to the rapid removal and destruction of the product from all retail locations.
