Watch This Veteran K-9 Dog’s Clever Tactics for Getting Belly Rubs from Mom!

A retired military dog has mastered the art of securing belly rubs from his owner in a heartwarming and humorous manner, captivating viewers across the internet.

In a viral TikTok video posted in September by user @mwdrex_and_rider, Ryder, a German shepherd who served five and a half years in the army, can be seen lying belly-up on the floor, cleverly positioned in his mom’s path, eagerly awaiting some attention and affection.

“This is Ryder, my husband’s former military partner. After he got injured, he came to live with us. Now, he knows where I’m headed and places himself just right to guarantee belly rubs,” explained the video’s caption.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, there are about 1,600 military working dogs serving in various capacities across the globe, assisting soldiers in keeping our nation secure through missions on land, air, and sea.

To join the ranks of military dogs, hopeful pups must complete a Military Working Dog Training Program lasting around five months, with only about half of the applicants making the cut. They must also be free from health issues like hip dysplasia to qualify.

As stated in an official government article, each military working dog holds a rank one position higher than their handler, a practice that some interpret as a mark of respect for their service, while others see it as a safeguard against mistreatment.
