The heartwarming journey of a 12-year-old dog named Mara from shelter to forever home has taken the internet by storm.
Mara, a gentle giant with white fur, was given up to the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha when her owner found themselves homeless. Her luck changed when Sarah Brumfield, a 40-year-old Reddit user based in Omaha, decided to bring her into her family.
“Adopted this senior sweetheart yesterday!” Brumfield, who is known as GeekyMama online, posted, and her touching story quickly received 2,200 upvotes.
The post showcased striking before-and-after shots of Mara—one where she looked sad in the shelter and another where she exuded happiness in her new home with her fur-sister, Hera.
Brumfield, who works as a community health educator, has a soft spot for older dogs, often adopting them to offer a warm “retirement home.” After their long-time family dog passed away in 2022, Brumfield’s family also adopted a puppy named Hera, who is now two years old.
Though they faced heartbreak after losing another senior dog, Brumfield’s family felt ready to welcome Mara into their lives, and she fit in perfectly.
“Hera and Mara get along wonderfully! It’s like Mara was meant to be part of our family,” Brumfield shared happily.
Senior dogs like Mara often find themselves in shelters due to unfortunate circumstances like financial strains or health problems, as highlighted by the Animal Foundation. Unfortunately, they are often overlooked in favor of younger pets, despite the many advantages of adopting an older dog. Senior pups are usually calmer, well-trained, and deeply appreciative of the love they receive in their twilight years.
