Kyle Guy, a former NBA player who played for the Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings, has officially announced his retirement from basketball at just 26 years old.
In an exciting turn of events, Guy is returning to the University of Virginia as their Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant, as revealed in a press release on Wednesday.
Virginia’s Men’s Head Basketball Coach, Tony Bennett, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re ecstatic to have Kyle and his family back in Charlottesville. He’s not only an outstanding player but a remarkable individual who will undoubtedly enrich our program with his skills and competitive spirit.”
Guy shared his excitement in the press release as well.
“C’ville, I am back!” he declared. “I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Bennett and Carla Williams for this opportunity. It was a challenging choice, but my passion for this community made it clear where I belong. I’m eager to support this team and the University in any way I can. I also want my kids to see that hard work never stops—fail harder!”

During his time at Virginia from 2016 to 2019, Guy shined brightly, earning two All-American honors and being part of the 2019 National Championship team. He showcased his talent by being named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, averaging 19.5 points during the 2019 NCAA Final Four. Currently, he holds the record for the highest career 3-point shooting percentage at Virginia at 42.5% and ranks 27th in overall scoring with 1,323 points.
After his collegiate career, Guy was drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft but was quickly traded to the Sacramento Kings. He signed a two-way contract and played in 34 games, scoring a total of 91 points. Later, he joined the Miami Heat for the 2021-22 season, averaging 3.9 points per game. Recently, he spent two seasons playing overseas in Spain and Greece, where his final season was particularly impressive, averaging 14.3 points per game with a shooting percentage of 45.2% for Tenerife in Liga ACB.
Now, he’s stepping away from the court as a player and embracing the opportunity to contribute to his alma mater’s basketball program.
