The New York Knicks have made waves in the NBA by trading for star center Karl Anthony Towns, sending All-Star Julius Randle and guard Donte DiVincenzo to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This blockbuster move has fans buzzing about the Knicks’ chances for a title this season.
But this might not be the last shake-up for the Knicks. Insiders, including Kris Pursiainen, report that the team is potentially fielding offers for veteran center Mitchell Robinson.
Robinson, who is the Knicks’ longest-serving player, has had his share of injury challenges, limiting him to just 31 games last season due to an ankle issue. Although he managed to participate in playoff games against the Philadelphia 76ers, he re-injured himself in a confrontation with Joel Embiid, necessitating more surgery in May. He’s expected to return around late December or January.
His most productive season was in 2021-22, where he played 72 games, averaging 8.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and a remarkable 76.1% shooting from the field. In the last two seasons combined, however, he played just 90 games with averages dropping to 6.8 points and 9.1 rebounds.
While Towns enhances the Knicks’ roster, a player like Robinson remains valuable for his gritty play, especially after losing Isaiah Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Robinson led the league last season with an average of 4.6 offensive rebounds per game, highlighting his ability to impact the game significantly when healthy.
As teams consider adding Robinson, the lingering question remains: Can he stay healthy, and what would he cost in a potential trade?
