Magic Johnson Fires Back at Anthony Edwards: ‘I Don’t Engage with Those Who Haven’t Won’

NBA icon Magic Johnson, hailed as one of the greatest basketball players ever, has an unrivaled legacy that speaks volumes. Alongside fellow legend Larry Bird, Johnson is credited with revitalizing the NBA during its challenging times.

The respect that Johnson commands means that when he offers his views, fans pay attention. Recently, he shared his thoughts on Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards during an ESPN interview with Stephen A. Smith.

Johnson didn’t hold back, stating he doesn’t engage with players who have yet to win at the highest levels. “I never respond to a guy who’s never won a championship,” he noted. “He didn’t win a college championship; I don’t even know if he won a high school championship,” he added, pointing out Edwards’s lack of accolades.

Recently, Edwards stirred the pot with a remark about Michael Jordan, claiming he was the only skilled player from the ’90s. “I didn’t watch it back then… but I don’t think anybody had skill back then. [Jordan] was the only one that really had skill,” he told Lane Florsheim of the Wall Street Journal.

While Edwards, just 23, has proven to be a promising talent, his claims about past players may be overreached. Magic Johnson, a legendary point guard, boasts five NBA championships, three Finals MVP awards, and numerous All-Star selections. His playmaking skills are unmatched, and he’s often compared to greats like LeBron James.

Edwards, coming off a standout performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has a bright future ahead. He’s a two-time All-Star and a recent All-NBA member, but he still has a long way to go to match the legacies of players like Johnson. At this stage, he should focus on learning from the titans of the sport who paved the way for his success.
