This offseason, the Golden State Warriors have been on a mission to reclaim their title contender status. After losing superstar guard Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks during free agency, the Warriors quickly signed shooting guard Buddy Hield, point guard De’Anthony Melton, and veteran forward Kyle Anderson to bolster their roster.
These additions aim to offset Thompson’s departure by enhancing the team’s shooting capabilities. However, the pressing question remains: Is this enough for the Warriors to compete in the fierce Western Conference? Have they built a solid team around stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green?
NBA great Paul Pierce thinks they haven’t quite hit the mark yet. On Kevin Garnett’s show, KG Certified, he suggested that Golden State should make a bold move for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. “The only way I see Golden State getting back to where they need to get back to is if they can find a way to get Giannis over there,” Pierce stated.
While it’s doubtful the Bucks would let Antetokounmpo go easily, a poor playoff performance could lead them to consider a trade. The Bucks are currently in their second season with Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard as teammates. A disappointing early exit could jeopardize their partnership.
Should Antetokounmpo join the Warriors, it wouldn’t guarantee a swift return to the top of the NBA. However, his presence would keep Golden State competitive and extend their championship window during Curry’s remaining prime years.
The combination of Antetokounmpo’s physical playstyle with Curry’s shooting prowess could make the Warriors a formidable opponent. Despite both players aging, such a duo would be difficult for any team to confront.
Speculation has also arisen about Curry potentially leaving Golden State if they fail to remain competitive. Pierce dispelled these rumors, asserting that Curry is likely to stick with the Warriors for his entire career. “He’s going down with that ship. It’s all legacy,” he commented.
The odds of Antetokounmpo teaming up with Curry in Golden State seem slim, but in the unpredictable landscape of the NBA, anything is possible.
