In an intense showdown, the United States Men’s Basketball team has risen to the occasion, clinching victory over France to secure the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Highlighted by electrifying performances from LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Steph Curry, USA Basketball is now turning its attention to comments made by 2023 Olympic gold medalist and runner Noah Lyles.
After their triumph, USA Basketball posted a celebratory photo of the team on the Olympic podium, playfully asking, “Are we the World Champs now?” This stems from Lyles’ remarks during the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where he expressed concern about the NBA labeling its champions as “world champions.”
“It hurts to see the NBA Finals claim ‘world champion’ status,” Lyles stated. “That’s just the US representing itself. The world is represented in races like this.” He emphasized the global participation and inclusion seen in athletics compared to basketball, where national flags are absent.
This sparked reactions from several NBA players, with the likes of Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and Devin Booker voicing their grievances. While some fans reacted strongly to Lyles’ comments, he raises an intriguing point: the NBA does primarily showcase American teams.
Nevertheless, with the USA’s dominance in Olympic basketball—having won five gold medals in a row—it’s hard to argue against their status as the best in the sport worldwide.
On the track, Lyles has proved himself with remarkable achievements, having recently won gold in the Men’s 100m and claiming bronze in the 200m, despite a COVID-19 setback just before the race. This year’s success follows his bronze in the same event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
As both the Men’s Basketball team and Lyles enjoy their Olympic success, let’s hope they can find common ground and celebrate their respective victories.
