This week, Chicago’s United Center will welcome a flurry of activity as the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) gets underway!
Vice President Kamala Harris is ready to accept her party’s nomination after gathering sufficient delegate support earlier this month. She’ll be accompanied on the ticket by her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Did you know that Illinois and Maryland are the top states to host the DNC? Illinois leads the pack, with Chicago having hosted the convention an impressive 12 times by 2024.
Maryland follows closely, having hosted nine conventions in Baltimore between 1832 and 1912.
New York has seen five DNCs, with the memorable 1924 convention being the longest—lasting 16 days as delegates worked to nominate a presidential candidate.
Missouri and California have each hosted five and four conventions, respectively, while Pennsylvania and Colorado have seen three and two gatherings. A slew of states, including Texas and Florida, have each hosted the DNC once.
As the DNC returns to Chicago, the convention spans from Monday to Thursday. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are slated to speak on Monday, and there are rumblings about Hillary Clinton making an appearance as well. Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are expected to take the stage on Tuesday.
Wednesday promises to be packed with speeches from figures like former President Bill Clinton, Representative Nancy Pelosi, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. We’ll also hear from Walz during his vice presidential acceptance speech.
On the final night of the convention, Harris will officially accept her party’s nomination for president.
This convention follows last month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Ohio Senator JD Vance accepted the Republican nomination for vice president shortly after surviving an assassination attempt on his running mate, former President Donald Trump.
