Cara Mund, a former Miss America turned politician known for her outspoken criticisms of Donald Trump, did not secure the Republican primary for North Dakota‘s congressional district.
The Harvard graduate and pageant queen, who also took issue with North Dakota’s abortion laws and criticized former President George W. Bush, placed third with 19.6% of the vote, losing to Julie Fedorchak in the 1st District Congressional race.
Mund, crowned Miss America 2018 by Savvy Shelds, has been a vocal anti-Trump and pro-choice Republican candidate.
In a social media post, Mund emphasized her commitment to represent North Dakota rather than align with Trump, aiming to restore order and law within the party.
Trump, convicted on 34 felony charges related to hush money payments, became the first US ex-president to be convicted of a crime by a New York jury for falsifying business records.
In another post, Mund highlighted concerns about women’s healthcare and democracy, contrasting her stance with Fedorchak, who received Trump’s endorsement.
In 2018, Mund penned a 3,000-word letter criticizing the Miss America Organization for failing to live up to its empowerment and transparency claims, eliciting a response from the organization, which expressed disappointment in her choice to air grievances publicly.
