In Memphis, Tennessee, two babysitters have been charged with serious crimes following the tragic death of a 1-year-old girl named Kali Moore. Dejon Smith, 34, and Kiya Moore, 21, face first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and child neglect charges, as reported by Action News 5.
The incident unfolded early on Saturday, August 17, when Memphis police received a call from LeBonheur Children’s Hospital regarding a child who had stopped breathing. Despite efforts to save her, Kali was pronounced dead about an hour later. Medical examinations revealed alarming evidence of abuse, including several skull and neck fractures, abdominal injuries, and extensive bruising.
Kiya Moore, the child’s aunt, had been babysitting with Smith for two days leading up to the incident. According to reports, conflicting stories were provided to investigators. Moore claimed she left Kali with Smith and returned to find her unresponsive, with Smith suggesting they say the child fell off the bed. In contrast, Smith alleged that Moore had physically assaulted Kali out of frustration over her crying.
Smith recounted hearing Moore yelling at Kali and stated that she slammed the child against various surfaces in a fit of anger. After attempting CPR and using cold water to revive her, they called for help. Disturbingly, authorities found that the home was not properly equipped for a baby, lacking essential supplies and safe sleeping arrangements.
The local community is in shock over the circumstances surrounding Kali’s death, with residents expressing their grief and disbelief. Comments from neighbors reflect a deep sadness at the loss of a child who never had a chance to grow up. Kali’s family is also struggling to cope with both their sorrow and the charges against Moore.
Both Moore and Smith are currently held at the Shelby County Jail without bond. Notably, court records indicate that Moore had previous legal troubles, having been indicted on multiple counts of aggravated child abuse in 2022 and was still out on bond at the time of this tragic event.
