Hey everyone, here’s some important news from the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FSIS). They’re warning consumers about a pork skin snack that may contain undisclosed allergens.
An announcement about a recall was shared on the FSIS website, cautioning that 1.7-ounce packs of “BONNEVAL’S BBQ Pork Skins” are mislabeled and actually contain wheat and soy, potentially causing serious allergic reactions.
These snacks were distributed by Bonneval Foods, LLC, in Louisiana. Look out for bags with the “EST” establishment code and the label 2249 inside the USDA inspection mark. The presence of wheat and soy in Worcestershire Powder was not mentioned on the label.
No illnesses related to this issue have been reported yet, but as a precaution, consumers are advised to get rid of these products. If you have concerns about any adverse effects, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider.
FSIS is concerned about these products in your pantry. Remember, do not eat them. Dispose of the items or return them to where you bought them.
The allergens were found during routine FSIS plant checks, but the specifics, like when the allergens were discovered and how many units were not correctly labeled, aren’t known.
While most people won’t be affected by undisclosed ingredients like wheat or soy, individuals with allergies could face severe consequences if they consume these items. Undeclared allergens in products have unfortunately led to fatalities in the past.
In a separate incident, Stew Leonard’s, a grocery chain in the Northeast, recalled Florentine Cookies last year after a tragic incident where an individual who wasn’t aware the cookies contained peanuts passed away.
The victim, later identified as Órla Baxendale, a 25-year-old British dancer pursuing her career in New York City, lost her life after consuming the cookies unknowingly.
Gluten, often found in wheat and other grains, can trigger hypersensitivity in those with celiac disease, an autoimmune condition distinct from wheat allergies.
