The upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles are set to introduce some exciting new sports, along with a few revivals of old favorites.
Among the new additions, flag football will make its debut, showcasing a limited-contact version of American football.
Squash will also join the Olympic roster for the first time, fulfilling the long-held aspirations of the World Squash Federation.
In the Olympics, “optional sports” are those that host cities can choose to include alongside the core sports mandated by the International Olympic Committee.
Returning favorites include baseball and softball, which previously graced the Olympics from 1992 to 2008 and made a comeback in 2020.
Cricket, last featured in the Games in 1900, will return in a limited-overs Twenty20 format, while lacrosse will also be back, played in the fast-paced Lacrosse Sixes format for the first time since 1948.
These proposals from the LA28 Organizing Committee were approved by the International Olympic Committee in 2023.
“LA28’s proposed sports capture the imagination both on the field and in culture,” said LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman. “They are innovative and community-driven, bringing new athletes and diverse fanbases into the fold while enhancing the Games’ digital presence.”
However, not all sports from Paris 2024 will make the cut for LA28. For instance, breaking—officially known as breakdancing—will not be featured, despite its debut in Paris.
While some fans expressed disappointment, Team USA’s Victor Montalvo remains focused on Paris 2024, appreciating the unexpected opportunity to compete.
Other sports like karate, motorsport, and kickboxing were also reportedly turned down for inclusion in the upcoming Games.
