FDA Raises Alarm: Guacamole Recall Now at Maximum Risk Level

Supreme Service Solutions LLC’s guacamole, peppers, and various vegetables, sold at Kroger stores, have been flagged by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to a contamination risk.

These products are suspected of containing Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium known to cause listeriosis, which can lead to severe infections. While healthy individuals might experience temporary symptoms like headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, those at greater risk—including infants, the elderly, and pregnant women—can face serious consequences, including death.

On September 17, the FDA reported that 11 out of 19 products involved in the recall were classified as Class 1, the highest risk level. This classification indicates there is a significant risk of serious health issues or even death from exposure to the products. More details on this classification can be found on the FDA website.

All products in question have surpassed their “best by” dates, which range from July 9 to July 28.

The contamination was identified by the Michigan Department of Agriculture through routine checks, leading to the voluntary recall of 19 items from Supreme Service Solutions.

These items were available in clear plastic grab-and-go containers in Kroger stores across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio, and were distributed by Wiers Farm Inc. from Willard, Ohio.

So far, there have been no reported illnesses or fatalities linked to this recall. It’s worth noting that last August, a separate listeria outbreak connected to Boar’s Head deli meats resulted in nine deaths and 57 hospitalizations across 18 states. The affected liverwurst products were produced between June 11 and July 17, 2024.

The recently recalled products include various guacamoles, pepper mixes, and vegetable options designed for grilling or kebabs.
