Fentanyl Delivered: How Telegram is Empowering Americans Amid DEA Crackdown

Illegal drug trade in the U.S. is increasingly reliant on the Telegram messaging app, which has come under fire following the recent arrest of its co-founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, in France. The arrest is part of a broader investigation into cyber-crime, focusing on various illegal activities taking place on the platform, including drug trafficking, child pornography, and fraud.

In response to these allegations, Telegram has stated its commitment to comply with EU laws and emphasized that it continually improves its moderation efforts. The platform defended itself by asserting that it shouldn’t be held accountable for how users exploit it.

On Telegram, drug dealers showcase images and videos of products they offer, including potent substances like cocaine, ketamine, and fentanyl, alongside other illicit drugs. Matias Dewey, a researcher in Argentina, calls Telegram a “go-to service” for drug dealers, pointing out a key issue: while Telegram operates globally, law enforcement works locally, creating significant challenges in tackling online drug sales.

Legal sellers of controlled substances must have proper registrations with the DEA, highlighting the illicit nature of transactions occurring on the platform.

As for the buyers, one individual shared insights on how straightforward the process is for purchasing drugs. He reports using recommendations from friends and online forums, verifying sellers’ legitimacy to mitigate scams. Once a seller confirms a buyer’s identity, payment is made through cryptocurrencies or popular mobile apps like Cash App or Venmo. Packages are cleverly shipped to a friend’s address under an alias, often arriving vacuum-sealed to mask any suspicious odors.

The Customers

This buyer recounted that he has successfully received packages multiple times, with only one incident where the post office intercepted a shipment containing marijuana without any resulting consequences for him.

Encryption

Founded in 2013, Telegram incorporates end-to-end encryption, making it nearly impossible to trace messages or track illegal substance dealers operating on the platform. Tim Mackey, who studies online drug sales, identifies Telegram as a key hub for illicit activities, noting that while some channels are occasionally shut down, it’s often unclear whether the platform or channel admins are responsible for the removals. He emphasizes that a majority of digital drug sales are linked to Telegram channels, solidifying its role in the underground drug trade.
