Great news for struggling families in Belton, Texas! The HOME Program is offering low-income families a golden opportunity to either receive a new home or repair their existing one at no cost.
If you’re a low-income family of four or fewer, you could qualify for a free three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. To be eligible, you must own and occupy your current home, reside within Belton’s city limits, have a property that’s free from liens and in poor condition, and be up-to-date on your property taxes.
Just keep in mind: to secure this free home or repairs, you’ll need to live in the property for at least five years before selling.
According to Karen Walker, manager of the HOME Program, the application process involves picking up an application, submitting necessary documents, and ensuring you have a clear title to your house. “Multiple owners are fine, as long as one resides there as the primary resident and has a homestead exemption,” she added.
For more details on how to apply, residents can reach out to Walker at 512-696-4056 or Jo-Ell Guzman at [email protected] or 254-933-5813.
Belton, located about 57 miles from Austin and 127 miles from Dallas, is considered one of the best places to live in Texas, according to Niche.com. The city’s population has grown from 23,138 in 2020 to an estimated 25,848 today.
While many are relocating to Belton from larger cities like Austin and Los Angeles, only a tiny fraction of homebuyers nationwide are seeking to move to this charming town. Interestingly, many residents are departing for places like Waco, Colorado Springs, and Houston.
As of June, the median home price in Belton was $280,000, down nearly 19.4% from the previous year, while the state median sits at $354,200. Texas as a whole is seeing an increase in sales despite falling home prices, as homes in Belton typically linger on the market for around 52 days before finding a buyer—well beyond the 30-day mark that signifies potential “staleness” in listings.
