On Tuesday, Georgia kicked off early voting, and a viral video on social media highlights the excitement surrounding it. The footage, captured in DeKalb County—a part of Atlanta—was first shared by Nnamdi Egwuonwu, a 2024 campaign embed with NBC, who tweeted about the impressive turnout: “Voter enthusiasm appears high on day one of early voting here in battleground Georgia. Check out the *very long* line outside of a polling precinct in DeKalb County.”
Egwuonwu’s tweet racked up over 500,000 views and more than 2,000 shares. The video also made its rounds on TikTok via @ohsorandom1977, garnering around 380,000 views.
Many who shared the clip speculated that high early voter turnout could favor Kamala Harris. One user, Leslie Himes, commented, “These Georgia voters are in line to make history by voting #Harris_Walz2024. They definitely aren’t voting for Trump!!!”
Another user, Skyler Johnson, noted, “Georgia had record day one early voting turnout today. Donald Trump should be very, very nervous.”
Georgia opened early voting on October 15, and it will continue until November 1. Impressively, the state has already seen 328,000 ballots cast—more than double the previous record of 187,973 votes in a single day.
Despite the trends toward increased early and mail-in voting typically associated with Democrats, Georgia’s presidential race remains tight. As of October 15, Trump’s lead over Harris was just one point, according to polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight.
In 2020, Joe Biden made history by winning Georgia, the first Democrat to do so since 1992.
Data from the University of Florida’s Election Lab revealed that as of October 15, 5,800,325 early votes have been cast nationwide, with 52% from Democrats and 29.7% from Republicans, mainly by voters over 65.
Early voting, which surged in 2020 due to the pandemic, is available in 47 states, with Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire as the exceptions. In the 2020 election, a notable 69.2% of voters opted for early casting, showcasing its growing popularity.
