A heatwave is set to hit the Northeast for the first time this year. After a rainy spring, there’s almost no chance of rain in the upcoming week as temperatures soar above 90°F.
While the Northwest is heating up this week, nights are still cool due to winds from Canada. Temps will gradually rise from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. The air is expected to be dry, allowing for quick cooling in the evenings.
According to forecast maps from Windy.com, the heatwave will kick off on Friday. Cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City will see temperatures over 90°F.
Heatwave Alert!
Next week will bring scorching temperatures to the Northwest. AccuWeather’s Meteorologist, Brandon Buckingham, predicts a local high-pressure system forming over the area, while the jetstream shifts northward.
Heatwaves typically occur in mid-to-late summer. The heat dome currently affecting the Southwest might trigger a heatwave in the Northeast or Midwest next week.
Expect humidity with minimal rain next week. However, the UV Index is an extreme 11, so take precautions. Some light rain may provide relief towards the end of the week, but most of the month will stay dry. Coastal breezes could cool down Boston and New York City areas by up to 10°F.
On Friday night, storms are expected in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous storm alert for Utica, NY. Prepare for high winds and potential fallen branches.
AccuWeather cautions that small storms may pop up during the week due to the heatwave. Stay safe and cool!
