In a recent letter to the U.N. Security Council, Iranian Permanent Representative Amir Saeid Iravani condemned Israel’s strike on Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, labeling it an “act of aggression” and a “heinous crime.” He called for the Security Council to swiftly denounce Israel’s actions, emphasizing the need for accountability to maintain regional peace and security.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they targeted Shukr due to his involvement in the Majdal Shams massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children from an Iranian rocket strike during a soccer game in northern Israel. IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari described Shukr as a key figure in these violent acts.
Iran, a staunch supporter of Hezbollah and the Axis of Resistance, has expressed concerns over escalating violence along the Israel-Lebanon border amid ongoing hostilities linked to the recent conflict in Gaza. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned Israel against further provocations, while the IDF remains prepared to counter threats.
Iravani criticized Israel’s claims of protecting civilians, claiming they contradict its actions in Gaza. He stated that Israel, as an occupying power, lacks any justification under international law for its military actions.
While the Majdal Shams Regional Council reported that none of the victims were Israeli citizens, the IDF labeled the strike as the deadliest against civilians in Israel since the conflict’s escalation on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties on both sides.
In his plea for action, Iravani urged the U.N. to compel Israel to cease military aggression in Gaza, withdraw forces from occupied territories, and halt attacks on Lebanon and neighboring countries.
The U.N. Security Council had previously discussed a ceasefire initiative proposed by the United States, although negotiations surrounding it remain stalled. Amid these developments, tensions continue to rise in Gaza and along the Israel-Lebanon border, particularly following violent exchanges that resulted in civilian casualties.
On a related note, the U.S. military reported neutralizing several armed vessels linked to the Iran-aligned Houthis, further illustrating the regional instability connected to the ongoing conflict. U.S. officials reaffirmed their firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself against threats while advocating for diplomatic solutions to end the hostilities impacting both Israelis and Palestinians.
