Back in the early 1980s, I was the executive director of a Habitat for Humanity project in New York City while in my mid-twenties. The area we were working in, the Lower East Side, was quite rough with frequent fires and a gritty vibe.
At that time, Habitat International was relatively new with only a few projects, mostly in Africa and the Americas. Jimmy Carter, the former President, got involved in the cause a couple of years after leaving office and decided to visit our project in New York City.
I vividly remember the day he arrived, with me nervously waiting to greet him outside. I even had a special treat for him – cheesecakes from Junior’s, a famous Brooklyn deli. The interaction with him was a mix of awe and excitement.
Carter’s involvement in our project was significant, bringing attention and support. His humility and dedication to helping others left a lasting impression. His sense of humor and down-to-earth nature made the experience memorable.
The work we did in New York City with Habitat was a stepping stone for the organization, showcasing its mission in a challenging urban environment. The impact of Carter’s involvement was immense and inspirational.
Despite his brief visit, the influence of Jimmy Carter on the project and on me personally has been enduring. His commitment to humanitarian causes and his genuine character have left a lasting mark on those around him.
Reflecting on that time now, over four decades later, I can confidently say that meeting Jimmy Carter and working alongside him was a truly life-changing experience that strengthened my faith and belief in making a positive impact in the world.
