A recent flash poll reveals that about two-thirds of voters believe Vice President Kamala Harris emerged victorious in Tuesday night’s debate, with 63 percent supporting her performance.
Conducted by CNN shortly after the debate, the poll has a margin of error of 5.4 percent and indicates that only 37 percent of viewers thought former President Donald Trump won the event, marking a notable shift from a previous June poll where Trump held a commanding lead.
CNN’s political director, David Chalian, noted, “This is a complete reversal from what we saw in June,” highlighting the dramatic change in voter sentiment.
The deputy campaign manager for Harris also declared her the winner of the debate. Following the discussion, Harris saw a significant bump in favorability, rising from 39 percent to 45 percent, while Trump dipped from 41 percent to 39 percent.
“Her favorability rating increased by six points,” Chalian shared, adding that independent voters were pivotal in this shift—from -17 to +9 in favorability for Harris post-debate.
CNN engaged a group of undecided voters who expressed that the debate solidified their choices. One participant remarked, “Kamala was more optimistic and respectful,” while others felt convinced regarding their support for her initiatives.
Chalian pointed out that 54 percent of debate watchers felt confident in both Harris and Trump as potential leaders for the country.
During the debate, viewers used a dial to express their real-time opinions. Trump’s comments about abortion seemed to draw negative reactions, particularly when he discussed the implications of decisions surrounding abortion rights.
Debate moderator Linsey Davis countered Trump’s assertions, clarifying, “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born.” In contrast, when Harris discussed her views on abortion, she was met with more favorable reactions.
Harris stated, “It is immoral for the government to dictate what a woman can do with her body,” emphasizing personal freedoms over government control. This resonated with undecided voters, with one stating it was her favorite portion of Harris’ argument.
Overall, 42 percent of debate viewers felt Harris presented a stronger plan to address national issues compared to Trump’s 33 percent. Another viewer acknowledged differing views but agreed that individuals should make their own decisions without government interference.
