**Letitia James Celebrates U.S. Supreme Court Ruling**
Letitia James, New York’s Attorney General, is thrilled about the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling protecting the popular pill mifepristone against federal restrictions. The ruling was a blow to anti-abortion organizations who claimed that FDA regulations, which made the pill more accessible, were problematic.
The FDA approved mifepristone back in 2000, and it can now be obtained through mail order and pharmacies. The Supreme Court dismissed arguments against the FDA’s initial approval of the drug and its increased accessibility.
This victory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing battle for reproductive rights since the pivotal Roe v. Wade decision. Despite the celebrations, James emphasized that the fight for bodily autonomy and privacy would continue as anti-choice movements persist in challenging these rights.
James led a coalition of attorneys from 24 states who opposed the petition, filing a brief in support of FDA efforts to protect mifepristone from reinstated restrictions. The case highlighted changes made by the FDA between 2016 and 2021, expanding mifepristone use to up to ten weeks.
The coalition argued that imposing restrictions would have adverse effects on reproductive health, particularly for low-income and underserved communities. Center for Reproductive Rights commended the decision for rejecting attempts to revert to outdated regulations on mifepristone.
The ongoing political landscape suggests that GOP-led state legislatures may attempt to curtail reproductive freedoms by enacting restrictive laws. This underscores the importance of continued advocacy and vigilance to safeguard these rights for all Americans.
