Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney recently took a strong stance against former President Donald Trump, criticizing his actions during the January 6 Capitol riot. While campaigning alongside Democratic Presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in Ripon, Wisconsin—considered the birthplace of the Republican Party—Cheney called on “reasonable people from all across the political spectrum” to support Harris.
“Donald Trump was willing to sacrifice our Capitol and allow law enforcement to be attacked for his own gain. To act against the law and the Constitution to seize power? That is depravity,” Cheney stated. She emphasized the need to recognize this behavior, regardless of one’s political affiliation. “Any person who would do these things can never be trusted with power again. We must ensure that Donald Trump does not take the lead in our nation again,” she urged.
Cheney referred to evidence presented by special counsel Jack Smith regarding Trump’s actions on January 6. According to court filings, Trump reached out to then-Vice President Mike Pence on the day of the riot, urging him not to certify Joe Biden’s election victory. Pence declined, resulting in Trump’s fury.
After the Capitol was breached, Trump tweeted that Pence “didn’t have the courage” to reject the election results, which incited the rioters, who chanted threats against Pence. Notably, a minute after Trump’s tweet, Pence was evacuated for his safety, prompting concern from White House aides. Trump, however, allegedly responded to their concerns with indifference, saying, “So what?”
“When push came to shove, and Pence stood firm in his oath, Trump chose to attack him publicly instead of ensuring his safety,” Cheney said. She underscored the gravity of the situation, urging citizens to remember these events as November approaches.
