A recent YouGov poll conducted on July 22 revealed that most Americans, especially Democrats, support Joe Biden serving out his term instead of resigning.
Out of 2,665 adult Americans surveyed, 56% believed Biden should remain president until January 2025, while 30% suggested he should step down, with 14% undecided. Among Democrats, a significant 81% backed his completing the term, whereas only 37% of Republicans agreed.
Despite pressure from both parties to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race due to his age, 81-year-old Biden announced on Sunday that he won’t seek reelection and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
Although Biden decided not to run, he will continue in office until his term ends. However, many Republicans reacted by urging him to step down as president.
Tom Emmer, GOP Majority Whip in the House of Representatives, stated on X, “If the Democrat party has deemed Joe Biden unfit to run for re-election, he’s certainly unfit to control our nuclear codes. Biden must step down from office immediately.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson wrote on X, “If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
Rick Scott, Senator of Florida, publicly shared his intention to persuade the cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office. He posted on X, “Biden is not capable of fulfilling the requirements of the job, and that poses a threat to our national security.”
The 25th Amendment can be invoked when a president is unable to fulfill their duties for any reason. The vice president and most of the cabinet must declare the president unfit to lead, and the vice president then assumes the role of acting president.
Attention has now turned to Vice President Kamala Harris, her potential to compete against Trump, and who could be her running mate.
