Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia is demanding the arrest of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis after she skipped a subpoena hearing this past Friday. Willis is at the helm of the election interference case against former President Donald Trump and is currently under investigation by a GOP-led Georgia Senate committee.
The Georgia Senate’s Special Committee on Investigations is looking into allegations of misconduct against Willis, particularly regarding potential conflicts of interest and the misappropriation of public funds. Their aim is to amend laws or adjust appropriations to rebuild trust in the criminal justice system.
Willis was summoned to testify under oath but did not attend, claiming unresolved legal issues regarding the subpoena’s validity. Instead, she opted to attend a re-election fundraiser in Washington, which angered Greene.
Willis’ attorney, former Governor Roy Barnes, stated she wouldn’t participate until a judge confirmed the subpoena’s legitimacy. Greene took to X (formerly Twitter) twice to voice her frustration, suggesting that Willis believes she is above the law and calling for her arrest.
In her first post, Greene criticized Willis, stating, “Her defiance is absolutely unacceptable. There are very serious questions regarding various potential forms of misconduct… this investigation is all the more urgent considering her political persecution of the leading candidate for President.”
In her second tweet, Greene stated, “Fani Willis should be arrested for ignoring her subpoena,” referencing the 2023 Georgia Code that stipulates failure to comply with a subpoena can lead to contempt of court charges, with possible fines or jail time.
If it turns out Willis did not comply with the subpoena, Greene’s calls for her arrest might be taken seriously by the state assembly.
This incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny Willis faces regarding her handling of the election interference case, which previously saw the resignation of Nathan Wade, the former special prosecutor, due to their past romantic involvement.
Attempts to reach Taylor Greene and Fani Willis’ teams for comment outside of work hours were unsuccessful.
