Mary Trump, the estranged niece of former President Donald Trump, has raised concerns that Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance could jeopardize “women’s reproductive rights and bodily autonomy” if the GOP regains control of the White House.
Donald Trump revealed Vance, a Senator from Ohio, as his running mate on Monday. Shortly after surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Trump endorsed Vance on his Truth Social platform, claiming Vance was the ideal choice for vice president.
In response, Mary Trump criticized Vance as a “misogynist” in her newsletter, The Good in US, and expressed her thoughts on X, a platform formerly known as Twitter. She cautioned that Vance shares her uncle’s disdain for women, citing his previous calls to outlaw abortion without exceptions.
Predicting a Republican victory in the presidential election could lead to a society resembling the dystopian world depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale, where women’s rights are severely restricted by conservative religious principles.
“Donald was never going to choose a woman as his running mate,” she wrote. “He holds too much contempt for women. In Vance, he has found a kindred spirit who shares his disdain for women. If the Trump/Vance ticket wins, women’s reproductive rights and autonomy will be in jeopardy.”
“American women will suffer greatly if Donald and Vance reach the White House, as they will turn The Handmaid’s Tale into reality,” she warned. “We must prevent either of them from coming near the Oval Office.”
Donald Trump, known for his efforts to overturn federal abortion rights by appointing conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, has recently attempted to moderate his stance on abortion in his quest to return to the White House.
Trump’s revised abortion stance includes refraining from advocating a nationwide ban on abortion in the Republican Party platform. He now argues that abortion should be a matter of “states’ rights” and criticizes Democrats for their perceived extreme views on the issue.
Vance has also seemingly shifted his position on banning abortion at the federal level, causing controversy among conservatives when he expressed support for access to the abortion pill mifepristone.
The reelection campaign of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, supported by Mary Trump, has focused heavily on Trump’s abortion policies, highlighting how his judicial appointments impacted Roe.
The Biden-Harris campaign asserts on their website that “Donald Trump aims to outlaw abortion nationwide,” promising that “Joe Biden will not allow this to occur.”
