Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Donald Trump, shared her thoughts in a blog post that the “truth is quite simple” about her uncle, labeling him as “a racist, a misogynist, and a liar” after his appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention.
During the convention in Chicago, Trump, facing scrutiny over his invitation, participated in an interview moderated by ABC’s Rachel Scott, Fox’s Harris Faulkner, and Semafor’s Kadia Goba. Scott challenged him on why Black voters should trust him, recounting his previous comments directed at Congresswomen of color and his harsh treatment of Black journalists.
Trump criticized Scott’s questions, suggesting they were disrespectful and asserting, “Are you with ABC? I think they’re a fake news network.” In Mary Trump’s view, when her uncle faced tougher inquiries, he quickly regressed to his usual combative persona.
The interview took a notable turn when Scott asked Trump if he believed Vice President Kamala Harris’s nomination was race-based. He responded by claiming he hadn’t recognized her as Black until a few years ago, leading to widespread backlash against his comments.
At a rally in Houston, Harris referred to Trump’s remarks as “the same old show,” emphasizing that the American public deserves better than divisiveness and disrespect.
Mary Trump reflected on the NABJ interview, stating it wasn’t surprising to witness her uncle’s racist tendencies. She remarked, “The truth is quite simple. Donald can’t help himself.” She believes he’s a bully unfit for the White House and called his decision to avoid certain debates a sign of cowardice.
Previously, there had been uncertainty over whether Trump would debate Harris, especially after President Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race. Despite initial ambiguity, Trump confirmed he would participate in a debate against Harris on September 4.
