The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall alert concerning a tasty treat that could pose serious health risks for some consumers. Hammond’s Candies, based in Denver, has recalled its “Dark Chocolate Filled Mini Waffle Cones” due to the unlisted presence of milk in the product. This notice was posted on the FDA’s website on Friday.
The recall stems from a report by a consumer who suffered an allergic reaction after eating the mini waffle cones. According to the notice, “Individuals with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity are at risk for serious or potentially life-threatening reactions.”
The affected products, packaged in 4-ounce bags, were sold across at least 38 states and the District of Columbia, as well as on Amazon and Hammond’s website. The recall includes items with the UPC number “6 91355 90513 5”, item number “FC23212”, product code “LN0525453”, and “Use By” dates of “03/20/2025” or “05/20/2025.”
Although no additional allergic reactions related to the recall had been reported at the time of publication, Hammond’s advised consumers to return the products to their point of purchase for a full refund.
For those without a milk allergy, this might seem like a minor issue. However, cross-contamination could lead to severe allergic responses, including anaphylaxis—a medical emergency characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, and potentially, loss of consciousness. Other signs of a serious allergy can include hives, rashes, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
Milk is classified as one of the nine “major food allergens” recognized by the FDA, alongside eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. According to the CDC, about 6 percent of U.S. adults and 8 percent of children suffer from at least one food allergy.
Moreover, milk can also be a concern for those with lactose intolerance, a condition where individuals struggle to digest lactose, the sugar found in dairy. Symptoms may include bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Some affected individuals might take lactase supplements to help them enjoy dairy without discomfort.
