During a U.S. Navy exercise in Jacksonville on Tuesday, a rescue swimmer tragically lost his life during a training course. He was preparing for an assignment with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 in Japan. The 41-year-old Pete Lagosh was a student at the Navy Surface Rescue Swimmer School Cat II.
The school offers a 2-week refresher course for rescue swimming professionals returning to duty after a year off. Lagosh, a 1997 graduate of Holy Family School in Wisconsin, was a member of a close-knit alumni group.
Friends fondly remember Lagosh as a fun-loving soul, active in scouting and skateboarding. Despite growing apart after high school, the impact he had on those around him remains profound.
Lagosh, a Navy veteran since 2007, was a devoted father and husband. A fundraiser has been set up to support his family during this difficult time, reflecting his reputation as a caring and generous individual.
Unfortunately, military accidents have been on the rise in recent years. The Navy, in particular, is facing scrutiny after a series of deadly mishaps. Efforts are underway to improve safety measures and prevent further tragedies.
