New York Mayor Eric Adams has praised President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside for the 2024 presidential election but has chosen not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
In an interview with CNN, Adams stated, “Whoever wants to run, they should have the right to do so. We decide who can best represent us.”
President Biden recently announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race after growing pressure from within the party and key Democratic donors. Adams released a statement acknowledging Biden’s decision, emphasizing the President’s contributions in navigating the country through challenging times.
Adams praised the transition of leadership as a crucial moment for the nation, appreciating Biden’s passing of the torch to a new generation of leadership.
Adams emphasized his support for the democratic process and noted his readiness to engage with the party’s nominee for a productive discussion on future steps.
Adams has strongly spoken out about the financial challenges faced by New York City due to increased migrant inflow during Biden’s tenure.
He has underscored the need for additional federal support to address the ongoing impact on the city. Adams had also highlighted Harris’ role in leading the response efforts at the U.S-Mexico border crisis.
Despite Adams’ stance, Harris has garnered wide support from various Democratic figures, including endorsements from former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Biden, post his announcement, threw his support behind Harris, urging Democrats to unite and defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
These recent developments underscore the evolving dynamics within the Democratic Party as the race for the 2024 nomination gains momentum.
