Listeriosis can be severe, impacting even healthy individuals. According to the CDC, around 260 of the 1,600 annual U.S. cases lead to fatalities.

Typically, symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting may appear within 24 hours after eating contaminated food, while more severe forms can arise within two weeks, presenting symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and confusion.

Pregnant individuals may experience milder symptoms, but they are at higher risk for complications such as miscarriage or severe infections in their newborns.

Though listeriosis is uncommon, it occasionally leads to food recalls. Recently, an outbreak related to Boar’s Head deli meats resulted in 10 deaths and at least 59 illnesses, with the CDC expecting the true figures to be higher as reporting can lag.

“Some individuals recover without seeking medical help and may not get tested for Listeria,” the CDC noted. Additionally, it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to identify if cases are linked to an outbreak,” they added.
