President Biden in Quarantine: How Widespread is COVID in the US?

President Joe Biden has had to pause his 2024 presidential campaign after contracting COVID-19, sparking debate among Democrats about his potential reelection at 81 years old.

Biden abruptly backed out of an event in Las Vegas after testing positive for the virus on Wednesday. He took to social media, reassuring supporters that he’s feeling well and appreciated the good wishes, promising to keep working for the American people.

As Biden recuperates in Delaware, his diagnosis has reignited discussions around COVID-19 over a year after the US officially declared an end to the Public Health Emergency.

How Prevalent is COVID-19 Currently?

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scaled back its COVID data tracking, it still offers weekly insights on testing, hospitalizations, and deaths countrywide.

Recent data indicates a gradual rise in positivity rates from 3.1% in April to 11% by July 6. This surge aligns with eased restrictions post-pandemic, increased social interactions, summer activities, and residual virus transmission.

The CDC noted increasing infections in 45 states, with the national virus reproduction rate at 1.14 on July 8. A rate above 1 suggests cases will grow, but levels remain higher since May compared to early 2020.

The dominant variant, KP.3, part of the FLiRT variant cluster, is linked to a spike in COVID cases during the summer. It exhibits increased infectivity but poses no severe symptoms. The existing vaccine offers some immunity, with a new one expected in September for enhanced protection.

Key symptoms to watch for, according to the CDC, include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell, among others. Weekly COVID-related deaths have significantly declined compared to peak figures in early 2021.

Is Biden More Vulnerable to COVID?

Biden’s rigorous campaign engagements increase his exposure to illnesses, heightening his susceptibility. Age is a factor – older individuals face higher risks of COVID-19 complications and mortality.

In 2022, Biden previously tested positive for BA.5 COVID-19 with mild symptoms and faced a rebound infection shortly after. Following a booster shot in 2023, he’s reported only mild symptoms currently and plans to maintain his duties while recovering.

Biden’s Diagnosis Amid Election Concerns

Biden’s recent illness coincides with growing uncertainties among Democrats regarding his election prospects. Some party figures have privately expressed concerns about his chances against Trump, suggesting he reconsider his campaign.

Despite these speculations, Biden remains determined to continue his presidential bid unless directed otherwise by medical advice. The ongoing situation underscores the broader conversation surrounding COVID’s impact on public health and political affairs.
