Political analyst Jennifer Rubin recently shared her thoughts on the potential impact of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Donald Trump. Kennedy Jr., an environmental lawyer and former independent candidate, joined Trump on stage at a rally in Arizona, prompting speculation about a possible role in Trump’s administration.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart, Rubin highlighted how Kennedy Jr. could be a “perfect match” for Trump, suggesting that Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, should be alert for any sudden changes, nicknamed an “October surprise.”
“The more people learn about Bobby Kennedy, the less they want to support him. In many ways, he aligns with Trump,” Rubin remarked, describing Kennedy Jr. as having some controversial opinions and conspiracy theories that echo Trump’s style.
An “October surprise” can be defined as any sudden event or information that shifts the dynamics of a presidential election, often benefiting one candidate while harming another.
Kennedy Jr., son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, has been a contentious figure, especially with his vocal skepticism about COVID-19 vaccines. Earlier this month, he faced backlash for admitting to dumping a bear cub in Central Park a decade ago, claiming it was meant to be amusing.
Rubin’s comments sparked a response from Kennedy Jr., who referred to her as a “washed-up loser” and dismissed the Never Trump movement as desperate and irrelevant. Despite Kennedy Jr.’s withdrawal, the race remains tight, with shifting polling numbers for Vance following the announcement of his vice-presidential nomination.
Recent polls show Vance’s unfavorable ratings have improved somewhat, although 43.2 percent view him negatively compared to 33.2 percent favorably. Nevertheless, Trump remains committed to Vance, emphasizing that their partnership is aimed at reclaiming the White House, dismissing any contrary narratives as “fake news.”
