A member of Russia‘s parliament made a bold statement on Monday, suggesting that Russia is prepared to target NATO airfields hosting Ukrainian F-16 jets intended for use against them.
Tensions between NATO and Russia have been escalating, with NATO leaders warning of a potential direct conflict as Russia threatened to escalate nuclear warfare against Ukraine following the invasion in February 2022.
Western allies, led by Denmark and The Netherlands, are set to deliver F-16 jet fighters to Ukraine this summer. These advanced aircraft will significantly boost Ukraine’s air capabilities to counter potential Russian threats.
Russia’s Lower House parliament defense committee head, Andrei Kartapolov, stated that NATO bases housing F-16s used in attacks against Russia would be considered “legitimate” targets by the Kremlin.
On the other hand, a Ukrainian officer, Serhii Holubtsov, hinted at keeping some F-16s outside Ukraine to prevent them from becoming targets. This strategic move ensures a balanced ratio of operational aircraft to available pilots.
The integration of F-16s into Ukraine’s Air Force poses challenges, including the need for secure airbases and reinforced hangars to protect the aircraft from potential threats.
Kartapolov’s remarks echo Putin’s previous warning that Western airbases hosting F-16s involved in operations against Russia would be deemed “legitimate targets.”
