Renowned author Stephen King has taken a jab at voters who trust former President Donald Trump with the economy, likening that faith to trusting a drunk teenager behind the wheel. This remark came in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), where King, a staunch Democrat supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, shared his colorful analogy.
“Voters saying they trust Trump with the economy is like saying you trust a drunk 17-year-old in a Corvette to drive you home safe,” King tweeted.
Typically, Republicans enjoy strong polling on economic issues, and many voters seem to favor Trump over Harris. However, recent trends indicate that his advantage may be shrinking. A Financial Times poll last month showed Harris edging out Trump, with 42% favoring her on economic matters compared to Trump’s 41%.
Another poll from USA Today/Suffolk University highlighted that Trump’s lead on the economy has diminished since Harris joined the presidential race, with 50.6% of likely voters believing Trump would perform better in this area, compared to Harris’s 44.8%.
In response to these shifting dynamics, Harris criticized Trump during a rally in New Hampshire, accusing him of prioritizing billionaires and claiming his economic proposals could lead to increased costs for families.
Throughout the campaign, King has consistently voiced his criticisms of Trump and other GOP figures. Recently, he accused Trump and his running mate JD Vance of neglecting the working class by not participating in Labor Day events, contrasting their absence with Harris and her running mate Tim Walz’s active engagement.
King also turned his attention to tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk, challenging his pro-Trump sentiments by pointing out that most reported cases of electoral fraud involve Republicans, after Musk suggested that efforts against voter ID laws were linked to fraud.
In a pointed message, King noted that Musk is “far too bright to swallow” Trump’s rhetoric, reflecting the ongoing clash of ideas between prominent public figures as the election season heats up.
