Sweet and Savory Recall: Warning Issued for Blintzes, Dumplings, and Baked Goods in Five States

Attention consumers: a recent recall of Russian-style dough products could pose severe health risks due to undeclared allergens. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that M&P Food Production Ltd. is pulling several types of pirozhki, vareniki, and “Russian style” blintzes from the shelves.

The recall affects nine product varieties, all sold from August 27, 2023, to August 27, 2024, in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Florida. The culprits? Potentially undeclared wheat, milk, and sesame—all common allergens that can provoke serious reactions.

The recalled items include:

  • M&P Cheese & Cherry Blintzes: 14-ounce packages, UPC 707163303257
  • M&P Cheese Blintzes: 14-ounce packages, UPC 707163303251
  • Pirozhki: Various flavors (Black Currant, Potatoes, Cabbage) in 40-piece boxes
  • M&P Vareniki: Several flavors in 14-ounce packages including Sour Cherry, Potato & Onion, Potato & Mushroom, and Farmer Cheese, with respective UPCs for each.

All items have “best-before” dates from August 27, 2024, to August 27, 2025. Consumers should promptly return any purchased products for a full refund. For questions, contact M&P Food Production at 718-438-5197, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET.

This recall came to light after an FDA inspection discovered the presence of allergens not listed on the packaging. Thankfully, no illnesses related to these products had been reported at the time.

For individuals with allergies, consuming these products could trigger anaphylaxis, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention. Symptoms include throat swelling, difficulty breathing, and fainting. Other allergic reactions may include rashes, hives, stomach issues, and more.

According to the CDC, about 6% of adults and 8% of children in the U.S. have food allergies, with wheat, milk, and sesame classified as major allergens by the FDA. Other common allergens include eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy.

It’s also worth noting that wheat can pose serious risks for those with celiac disease, while undeclared milk may lead to discomfort for individuals with lactose intolerance.
