It’s been a bummer for Juneteenth enthusiasts as celebrations have been canceled in various parts of the U.S.
Events in Los Angeles, Detroit, Tennessee, and even at the Fox Theatre have been scrapped. Some blame “unforeseen circumstances”, while others cite rising costs.
Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in 1865, was recently made a federal holiday by President Joe Biden. Many states also observe this day.
The Fox Theatre concert featuring The Commodores and Detroit Youth Choir for Juneteenth has been called off. Refunds are available for ticket buyers.
Similarly, Leimert Park in Los Angeles postponed their Juneteenth celebration due to unexpected circumstances and increasing costs.
Despite the cancellations, other cities like Cleveland, Akron, and Cincinnati are going ahead with their events and parades.
The White House hosted a Juneteenth concert with performances by Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle.
